What does an Geospatial Analyst do at companies like GRO INTELLIGENCE?

Join the A.I. company tackling some of the most consequential problems facing the world today. Gro Intelligence is a fast-growing, mission-driven data, analytics and insights company dedicated to understanding the interconnected global markets related to agriculture, food and climate. From the food we eat to the clothing we wear and the gasoline in millions of cars across the globe, agriculture touches our daily existence like few other industries.  And it’s being completely upended by climate change, trade wars, finite global resources, fickle public policies, a growing population and ever-changing human tastes (e.g. organic produce, plant-based proteins, etc).  Come help us understand the complex interplay of these various forces and their ripple effect on global markets.

With offices in both New York and Nairobi, and the financial backing of prominent investors including TPG Growth, Data Collective, and GGV, Gro is a diverse team of technologists, scientists, and business professionals.  Our team is growing rapidly and we’re looking for highly motivated, intellectually curious individuals with a shared commitment to building solutions that impact the world on the most basic level.

Gro has been featured prominently alongside the company’s founder and CEO in several recent outlets including the Inc. Female Founders 100, Recode Decode with Kara Swisher, Fast Company’s Most Creative People, Fortune’s Most Powerful Women in Business, and Vanity Fair’s Inside the Hive with Nick Bilton.

We are looking for highly-motivated, intellectually curious problem solvers who are hungry for personal growth. Successful candidates are humble and eager to learn. They should also enjoy working in a fast-paced, demanding, and constantly evolving entrepreneurial environment. Importantly, they are also fun to work with and have on a team - we have a strict ‘no jerks’ policy at Gro.

What You'll Do:

  • Work with the geospatial and engineering teams to identify and bring new sources of environmental geospatial data to Gro

  • Conduct geospatial analyses for both our remote sensing and vector datasets using ArcGIS or QGIS

  • Assist in data quality checks, documentation, and data management

  • This position is based in our NYC office, and travel is expected (post COVID-19)

What You Must Have:

  • A positive, can-do attitude. Successful candidates are gritty and resilient

  • Enjoy problem solving and creating processes/analytics to solve problems

  • Humility and openness are non-negotiable

  • Passion for, or familiarity with, agriculture, commodities, food systems, or the policy and financial environments around them

  • Solid grasp of technical concepts - you don’t have to be a software engineer but you have to be able to explain software and be able to use software platforms

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a 3 or 4-year accredited institution

  • Exceptional communication skills

  • Very organized, very detail oriented

What Strong Candidates Should Also Have:

  • 2+ years of post-undergraduate professional experience in geospatial analyses, for both vector and raster

  • Extensive familiarity with the Esri suite and QGIS, from image processing and aggregation to shapefile editing

  • Experience in multispectral satellite imagery analysis, in a wide variety of formats, sensors, and resolutions for natural resource applications

  • Spatial analysis is your strong suit, including zonal statistics and comparing different data outputs

  • Excellent written and verbal skills

  • Self-motivation with an ability to problem-solve and work well independently and as part of a team

 Perks of working at Gro:

  • Corporate Seamless account – lunch paid for daily (when we are back working in our offices)

  • Flexible and fun start-up environment

  • Work with an incredibly diverse team who speak more than 25 different languages and come from different backgrounds such as agronomists, data scientists, research, trading, mathematicians, customer service, engineering, and sales

  • Full health benefits, 401(k), all the important bases covered
