JOB SUMMARY:

The Mentor/ Coach will provide ongoing support to the teaching staff. The Mentor/Coach ensures that the program is adhering to the Head Start Performance Standards, the Head Start Act, California Care Licensing regulations, Quality Rating, and Improvement System, and other related laws and ordinances, and providing high-quality Early Childhood Development services. The purpose of the Mentor Coach is to support and expand early educator's knowledge on early childhood education best practices as well as increase knowledge of the tools and resources used by KCAO Head Start/Child Development through coaching, training, and technical assistance.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Head Start and Educational Standards:

  • Enforces Office of Head Start and State of California licensing rules and regulations for all areas that concern parents of children enrolled or in the process of enrolling at child care centers.
  • Follows the Office of Head Start, Department of Social Services Licensing Division and agency regulations and standards to maintain a safe environment for children and employees.
  • Follows agency rules as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Applies rules and regulations consistently and objectively in dealings with enrolled families.
  • Staying current of the changes within the Office of Head Start and California Child Development regulations governing the operation of child care centers.
  • Must be committed to continual learning and self- improvement through training, formal education, conference attendance, and keeping abreast of changes within the Office of Head Start and California Child Development regulations governing the operation of child care centers.

 

Early Childhood Education Mentor/ Coach Functions:

  • In collaboration with Education Services, reviews and updates annually the education service area plan in cooperation with staff and parents.
  • Conducts regular site visits and develop meaningful, productive relationships with site directors and teaching staff.
  • Coaches and guides staff through the implementation of a developmentally and linguistically appropriate approach to child development and education.
  • Provide staff with support and strategies for challenging behaviors.
  • Provides technical assistance, support, materials, and equipment to staff working with children with special needs. Recruits and develops contracts with mental health consultants for Head Start service requirements.
  • Provides initial and ongoing training and technical assistance to identified teaching staff regarding program philosophy, policies, procedures and other topics as requested or assigned to ensure the uniform delivery of quality services.
  • Provides initial and ongoing training and technical assistance to staff including but not limited to CLASS, Creative Curriculum, DRDP, ECERS, CSEFEL and other tools used within the program.
  • Conducts CLASS observations as required by Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Plans and implements professional development opportunities such as learning communities and onsite training based on best practices, Head Start Performance Standards.
  • In collaboration with the Education Services team, conducts ECERS observations according to the timeline that is set.
  • Supports school readiness programming with assigned teaching staff.
  • Supports and monitors site staff with care and supervision to ensure lapses do not occur.
  • Confers regularly with Site Directors and teachers regarding children's behavioral or learning problems, and recommends methods of modifying inappropriate behavior and encouraging learning experiences.
  • Conducts observations within classrooms and provides on-site consultation to teaching staff.
  • Support Education Services team with developing and delivering in-service training programs and orientations for teaching staff.
  • Develops and maintains schedule for on-site visitations. Meets regularly with immediate supervisor and attends all meetings and training sessions as requested.
  • Input data into ChildPlus and analyze reports.
  • Provides input into the agency Training and Technical Assistance Plan.
  • Assists in accomplishing the program's non-federal share through access to community resources (services, donations, discounts, and/or goods).
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

 

Other duties as assigned:

  • Current Child Development Site Supervisor Permit or obtain within 6 months of employment and keep current by completing 25 hours of professional growth, annually.
  • Must work towards CLASS and ECERs Trainer Certification.
  • Follow safety protocol and standards.
  • Assist Manager and Director as required/requested.
  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as directed.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is highly preferred.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field from a recognized college or university.

AND

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a Supervisor in child development, or similar, program AND Must have 6 units in Infant and Toddler Development.
