About the Position

The International Environmental Law Project (IELP) is Lewis & Clark Law School's on-campus international environmental clinic. The clinic's staff works with students to implement, enforce, and develop international environmental law, as well as teach relevant curriculum. The IELP Staff Attorney will work with the Director to develop a case- and project-load that is commensurate with their experience and inline with IELP's mandate and goals. The Staff Attorney will seek paid attorney work and will additionally support fundraising efforts. The Staff Attorney will support the development of the IELP website and additional outreach materials. 

The immediate appointment to this position will be for a term of two years. At that time, the College intends to consider the possibility of a renewal or conduct a search for a longer term appointment to this position. However, if notice of termination is not provided at that time, the appointment will continue on the same terms until such notice is provided.

What You'll Do

  • Build and implement an international environmental law practice that meets demand by clients and funders.

  • Support fundraising efforts by identifying potential donors and funders, draft proposals and other material as necessary, organize and attend necessary meetings.

  • Develop expertise, relationships, and networks in areas of interest to IELP.

  • Support website development, outreach to potential students, engagement with current students and alums.

Must Haves

  • Doctoral/JD degree

  • Five years of engagement in international negotiations or practice experience in the area of international law.

  • Fluency in English and Spanish required

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and advising skills.
  • Ability to work well alone and with others, write legal documents clearly and concisely, and complete necessary legal research.
  • Capacity to cope with complex situations through deliberate analysis and planning.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.

Nice to Haves

  • Five years of legal practice post-law school with a focus on international fisheries law, biodiversity-related conventions, and climate change law.

Work Schedule

  • Full time
