Description

Under the general direction and guidance from the HLA Laboratory Director, the Associate HLA Laboratory Director is expected to be involved with all aspects of laboratory functions which include clinical, technical, quality, administrative and managerial duties.  In the absence of the HLA Laboratory Director, the Associate HLA Laboratory Director is to assume and fulfill the role as the HLA Laboratory Director and be responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory.  (The responsibilities and duties of high complexity HLA Laboratory Director include those outlined in the Federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) 42 CFR 493.1445, and as required by all other pertinent regulatory agencies (e.g. American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, ASHI; Kansas Department of Health and Human Services, KDHHS; Food and Drug Administration, and FDA))

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

LABORATORY

  1. Oversee all the research, development and educational activities within the laboratory which include, but are not limited to:
    1. Test evaluation, development, validation and implementation
    2. Analysis, summary and interpretation of test results
    3. Writing of manuscripts, presentation of results at seminars and conferences
  2. Provide technical consultation and assistance to the laboratory staff
  3. Participate in quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, safety and productivity of the testing performed
  4. Participate in laboratory management, administration, budgeting and strategic planning
  5. Provide education for new staff and rotating clinical residents and fellows
  6. Interact and provide consults to clinicians with the support from the HLA Laboratory Director
  7. Serve as a liaison to other departments within the organization and other transplant centers
  8. Responsible for other duties and projects as assigned by the HLA Laboratory Director
  9. Must be accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation at all times.
  10. May also perform the duties of technical supervisor, clinical consultant, general supervisor, and testing personnel, according to the scope and responsibilities as outlined by CLIA (42 CFR 493.1451, 42 CFR 493.1457, 42 CFR 493.1463 and 42 CFR 493.1495, respectively) and all pertinent regulatory agencies, or delegate these responsibilities to personnel meeting appropriate qualifications.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. Must hold an earned doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, or be a Doctor of Medicine or osteopathy licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of Kansas or Missouri.
  2. Must be Board eligible or certified and continue to be certified: (1) in clinical Time or combined anatomic/clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology or other appropriate medical board, or (2) by a Board approved by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for high complexity testing.
  3. Must have at least 2 years full-time post-doctoral laboratory training or experience in immunology, histocompatibility, immunogenetics, or a related field, or a residency in clinical or combined anatomic/clinical pathology or other related medical specialty.
  4. Must have at least 2 years fulltime post-doctoral training in directing or supervising high complexity testing in human histocompatibility and immunogenetics in an accredited or approved laboratory.
  5. Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week and participate in 24-hour call. 
  6. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy.  Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines.  Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Demonstrated ability to provide direction and achieve cooperation from others.
  8. Strong organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; excellent initiative, problem solving and decision-making skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
  9. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
  10. Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and lab equipment.
  11. Ability to speak and communicate clearly in order to accurately convey information in person or by phone.
  12. OSHA Category II – Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties.  Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
  13. Home internet and wireless phone access is required.
