Prior to his position with the City of Canby, Chief Smith retired from the Portland Police Bureau as the Assistant Chief of the Investigations Branch, after nearly twenty-nine years of service to the City of Portland, Oregon. Canby Police Department demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy of community policing; which is building strong relationships outside the police department with the intent to organize resources for the purpose of having the most positive impact on and with the community. Internally, our department's unity is about maximizing uniqueness and channeling that toward the common goals of this police organization. The department promotes innovation, with the belief progress is achieved by those who venture beyond their comfort zone and who are willing to challenge themselves. Thinking imaginatively, but realistically is essential when facing the challenges ahead so the organization can best prepare to meet them. Each member of the department is encouraged to look for new ways to handle old tasks and fresh approaches to new problems. The Canby Police Department has a typical hierarchal chain of command which includes the positions of Chief, Lieutenant, and five Sergeants, and 17 sworn officers. In all, the department consists of twenty-four (24) sworn and five (5) non-sworn authorized positions. The department has an established Records Unit, Detective Unit, K-9 Program, Traffic Program, Tactical Unit, School Resource Officer, Code Enforcement, and Property Evidence Unit. In addition, members participate in various multi-agency task force teams. Uniform officers are scheduled to work patrol twenty-four (24) hours/seven (7) days a week; providing a service to a city size of approximately four(4) square miles with a population just under 16, 000. The department is accredited with the Oregon Accreditation Alliance since June 11, 2004.
