At Fair Lawn High School we are committed to safety for all. We continue to be vigilant in our efforts to review, refine, and reinforce our security measures on a daily basis. In the past three years we have taken many measures in an effort to maintain a safe school environment. This includes limiting access to building entrances, installing manned security desks at those entrances, improving communications within the building, installing security cameras throughout the campus, and adding a School Resource Officer to our staff. As you are aware, Fair Lawn High School requires students to carry their student planner with them at all times. Student identification cards are also carried inside the planners. The next step in our efforts is to have those student identification cards clearly visible at all times during the school day. Displaying the ID card will assist us in maintaining a safe and orderly campus. With a population of 1566 students, we are currently the third largest high school in Bergen County. We are also a large campus with open lunches. Clearly visible ID cards will allow us to identify quickly whether or not an individual is indeed a student at Fair Lawn High School. Therefore, we will distribute lanyards and plastic pockets to hold student identification cards. Once distribution has been competed, we will require students to wear their identification cards at all times while in school. The lanyards that we will supply are designed with a safety feature that allows them to "breakaway" from around the neck should they become entangled. On January 14, 2008 we will begin the distribution of the lanyards. Once the lanyards have been distributed, students will be required to wear them. As with any requirement, there will be consequences should students not wear the ID card. Wearing ID cards now becomes a part of our school rules and as such there will be a disciplinary reaction when a student does not follow the rule.
