Glenview School District 34 strives to create an educational experience that provides give students with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in the future, whether that includes college, a career or both. The need to prepare students for advanced schooling has led Illinois schools to start implementing the Common Core State Standards. These new standards outline the skills and content our students must master in Math and English Language Arts at each grade level to continue on the path to college and career readiness. These higher standards require changes in what is taught and how it is assessed, which is a part of our strategic plan and goals. Therefore, the performance levels of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT), an exam that measures success in meeting the state standards, must be changed accordingly. The state has determined that the expectations in the current state standards for our students in grades 3-8 are too low and do not give an accurate picture of a student's ability to succeed in college and the workforce. Therefore, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is raising the bar on the ISAT performance expectations in Math and English Language Arts for elementary and middle school students. These higher expectations will cause a decrease in the number of students who meet and exceed standards. Some students who previously met or exceeded standards will instead show the need for improvement. However, these new expectations do not mean that our students know less than they did before or are less capable than they were in previous years. Instead, ISBE is simply expecting more of students going forward to show their progress toward college and career-readiness targets. As District 34 receives the results of the revised statewide tests, our staff will be able to provide the appropriate support and help for your student based on the new learning standards at an earlier point in their schooling. The new expectations also pave the way for the state to replace the ISAT ...
