This year, in direct response to the cultural dynamics regarding our country's history of racial injustice and systemic racism and our own insistent dedication to educational equity, we are introducing a series of classes and curriculum for both our staff and students designed to strengthen the connections and community of our campus and our mission of serving all students equitably and fairly. The conversations about race and bias and how they affect our school climate and student success began with all of our staff and will be interwoven into fall classes and continue through the years - and continue in the years to follow. During the past weeks leading up to the start of school, all staff participated in a series of online courses designed by an organization that is a national leader in diversity, equity and inclusion training. The first course, "How to Talk about Race," enables our staff to privately reflect on the present-day racial dynamics in our country and to learn how to identify, address and eliminate racial inequities. The second, "Finding the Parallels Between Microaggressions and Implicit Bias," builds on the first to empower staff to explore individual biases, their impacts and how they can lead to microaggressions. As staff complete these two courses, we will be following up with additional courses and discussions tailored specifically to meet the needs and challenges staff identify as the most important for improving the climate of our campus and the education of our students. This foundation of understanding and knowledge provide a critical, shared grounding for our staff as they then interact with our students and lead them in similar discussions and learning about these urgent issues. Our students will participate in nine half-hour, online classes beginning in September. Grade 9 will explore microaggressions; grade 10 will address implicit bias; grade 11 will explore a course on the "tragedy of non-ness"; and grade 12 will focus on empowering students as equity leaders.
