Founded in 1977, now in it™s 37th year, Gurjar is a well-established, non-profit organization from the New England Area, organizing year-round, educational and entertaining cultural events (Youth program, Diwali, Navratri, Spring/Summer Mela , Scholarship, Charity fund-raising, grand-parents club, Drama, Musical concerts, Poetry recitals), for more then 10,000 Gujarati speaking families. Gurjar volunteers and Executive Committee do the administrative work with no honorarium or overhead. Gurjar is a non-Profit 501(c)(3) organization with a tax-exempt status. The Indian community that makes up most of our membership comes from western state of India, Gujarat. It gets its name from "Gujjar Rashtra", the land of the Gujjars, a migrant tribe who came to India in the wake of the invading Huns in the 5th century. The history of Gujarat dates back to 2000 BC. It is also believed that Lord Krishna left Mathura to settle on the west coast of Saurashtra at Dwarka. Since the beginning of time Gujarat has been the witness to the march of civilization. From the early river valley civilizations, to the golden age of Indian history Gujarat has been home to a multitude of cultures. At the cross roads of the 21st century the land of Krishna and Gandhi continues its unrelenting march into newer areas like technology, infrastructure development and a system of open governance.
