Restoringthekootenai.org is getting a makeover. In a few weeks, a brand new version of the website will go live. Stay tuned. The Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Program is large-scale ecosystem-based river habitat restoration effort that will be implemented over a period of 10 to 15 years across a 55-mile reach of the Kootenai River in north Idaho. Kootenai Tribal elders have passed down the history of the beginning of time. That history tells that the Kootenai people were created by Quilxka Nupika, the supreme being, and placed on earth to keep the Creator Spirits Covenantto guard and keep the land forever. The Kootenais have never lost sight of their original purpose as guardians of the land. Today, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho seeks to fulfill this purpose by developing and implementing innovative, scientific approaches to guardianship of the land that consider the whole ecosystem at the watershed/subbasin scale, are socially and economically responsible, are supported by the local community and other partners within the watershed, and that incorporate adaptive management principles. This site provides general information and news about the Tribe's broad-scale habitat restoration efforts. The Habitat Restoration Program is a long-term effort being implemented in three phases over the next ten to fifteen years. Actions are designed to benefit the local community, improve in-stream habitat for fish, address bank erosion, land loss, and sediment loading. We are also working to reconnect and reestablish floodplain habitats. The Tribe has a number of other major fish and wildlife projects that complement this program. Check in periodically to keep posted on all these activities, and please let us know what you think.
