The LVA School was founded in 1978 as the "Danbury Reading Academy" by a group of community members with the purpose of alleviating the literacy problem in the Greater Danbury Area. At that time we trained volunteers to provide individual reading lessons to adults. As we grew, we affiliated with the Literacy Volunteers of America and became "Literacy Volunteers of America - Danbury. We continued to provide reading lessons. Additionally, we recognized a different need in the community. The growing immigrant population in Danbury needed to learn English as a Second Language (ESL). We decided to tackle this problem and started teaching English. Some more time went by and our parent agency was absorbed by Pro-Literacy Worlwide. Our agency decided that it would serve the community better by staying independent. Since then we have continued to provide educational services to the community. Now, we are known as the LVA School. Our main programs focus on teaching American English in a formal classroom environment that has been designed to improve learning. Our ultimate goal is to help our students reach success in college, training or business.
