Mounds View was named after the mounds or small hills that were present before the mounds were removed during World War II when the area became an important small arms arsenal and thousands of loads of sand and gravel were removed. The mounds were mainly in the northwest corner of the township high enough to be seen from almost anywhere in the township. The Township of Mounds View was created on May 11, 1858, the day Minnesota became a state. In 1958 the Village of Mounds View was incorporated.
