Neighbors Link was founded to meet the needs of 4,000 immigrants who represent 35% of Mount Kisco's population, with thousands more in adjacent Northern Westchester communities. When problems at many levels became apparent, concerned members of the community raised private funds to convert a masonry warehouse into a community center for low-income working people. That was in 2001, and it signaled the remarkable transformation of a whole community. Today, Neighbors Link is a multifaceted community center offering adult education in language and employment skills; a "Learning Links" after-school program; a Family Center for Parenting Programs to strengthen families and engage parents in their children's education; a Children's Evening Program for parents taking evening classes; Family Support Services including medical, legal and social service assistance and referrals; and a Worker Center for both skilled and unskilled workers. We offer classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), Parenting Skills, Computer Skills, Sewing and Eco-Cleaning, as well as workshops on job skills, health issues, worker safety, workers' rights, police/immigrant relations and civic awareness. Neighbors Link partners with theBedford Central School District, the Mount Kisco Police Department; Northern Westchester Hospital, Open Door Family Medical Centers; the Town/Village of Mount Kisco, the Town of Bedford; Westchester Community College; and numerous schools, houses of worship and non-profit organizations throughout the community to provide immigrant families with the tools they need for successful integration. More than 300 volunteers from throughout the community donate thousands of hours of service to Neighbors Link each year. From high school students to retirees, our volunteers are committed partners with a profound "hands-on" understanding of the Neighbors Link mission. As we begin our second decade, Neighbors Link is now recognized as a national model for addressing the realities of immigration in peaceful and positive ways. ...
