Why is the pre-testing process (scoping, authorisation, scheduling etc) so clunky and time-consuming for customers? Why do customers have to wait around for up to TWO weeks waiting for a PDF report after a pen-test is complete? Why do pen-test vendors charge different rates to different clients, even for work carried out by the same tester? We set about tackling these problems one at a time. We would build a platform where customers could get quotes and book tests online, without having to interact with anyone if they didn't want to. Our testers would report in real time as they found issues so clients could get to work closing down their risks straight away. We would bring our results to our customer's internal tools, such as JIRA, ServiceNow and Slack and become part of the team. We would bill clients hourly instead of padding out quotes to the nearest day, and we would charge every single client on the platform the same rate. We would be open, honest and transparent in everything we did. Customers would be able to chat to testers while they were testing. And if the test finished sooner than the time quoted, we would hand those hours back. And so we built the platform and launched OnSecurity in 2018, and haven't looked back since.
