In early 1974, three men from South Central Alaska; Harry Bates of Peters Creek Chapel, Jim Brayton of Valdez Assembly of God, and Jim Strutz of Abbott Loop Community Church in Anchorage, Alaska moved to Juneau and established a small community church with Harry Bates as Pastor. We met in the Seventh Day Adventist building. A year later, in June of 1975, Jim Braytons son Pat, with his wife Grace, followed from Abbott Loop. That same year, both Jim Brayton and Jim Strutz moved away. In August 1976, Pastor Bates moved back to Peters Creek Chapel, leaving Pat Brayton as the unofficial Pastor. Pastor Brayton was officially ordained Pastor of Valley Chapel in February 1977 by the elders of Abbott Loop Community Church- Pastored by Dick Benjamin. Under Pastor Brayton, we began work on a new building at our current location, 9741 Mendenhall Loop Road. While the building was under construction, we met on Sunday afternoons at Glacier Valley Baptist church. We paid for our new building entirely out of pocket. After meeting at Glacier Valley Baptist for a year and a half, the new building was ready to move into. We began officially meeting in the basement of our building in 1982 before moving to the upstairs a year later. In 2011 we finished a building expansion, which doubled the size of our sanctuary and increase fellowship and classroom areas. The project was completed without taking a loan. More changes came during the summer of 2013 when Pastor Pat retired as senior pastor and he and his wife Grace moved to Anchorage to be closer to family. In the months that followed, the family of Valley Church stepped up to continue the work of the ministry. The elders and leadership team continued to trust God to bring in the right person to pastor the church, and in May of 2014, Valley Church ordained one of her own, Dani Cherian. We are so excited with the direction the Lord is leading us in, and we expect God to move mightily in our midst. We continue to seek His will and His way in everything that we do.

What Skills Does a person Need at Valley Church?

At Valley Church, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Plumbing: Plumbing is any system that conveys fluids for a wide range of applications. Plumbing uses pipes, valves, plumbing fixtures, tanks, and other apparatuses to convey fluids. Heating and cooling (HVAC), waste removal, and potable water delivery are among the most common uses for plumbing, but it is not limited to these applications. The word derives from the Latin for lead, plumbum, as the first effective pipes used in the Roman era were lead pipes. In the developed world, plumbing infrastructure is critical to public health and sanitation. Boilermakers and pipefitters are not plumbers although they work with piping as part of their trade and their work can include some plumbing.
  2. HVAC: Designing, developing, maintaining, and updating Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning and Cooling system.
  3. Carpentry: Carpentry is a skilled trade and a craft in which the primary work performed is the cutting, shaping and installation of building materials during the construction of buildings, ships, timber bridges, concrete formwork, etc. Carpenters traditionally worked with natural wood and did the rougher work such as framing, but today many other materials are also used and sometimes the finer trades of cabinetmaking and furniture building are considered carpentry. In the United States, 98.5% of carpenters are male, and it was the fourth most male-dominated occupation in the country in 1999. In 2006 in the United States, there were about 1.5 million carpentry positions. Carpenters are usually the first tradesmen on a job and the last to leave. Carpenters normally framed post-and-beam buildings until the end of the 19th century; now this old fashioned carpentry is called timber framing. Carpenters learn this trade by being employed through an apprenticeship training—normally 4 years—and qualify by successfully completing that country's competence test in places such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa. It is also common that the skill can be learned by gaining work experience other than a formal training program, which may be the case in many places.
  4. Painting: Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or "support"). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is also called a painting. Painting is an important form in the visual arts, bringing in elements such as drawing, gesture (as in gestural painting), composition, narration (as in narrative art), or abstraction (as in abstract art). Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in a still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract, narrative, symbolistic (as in Symbolist art), emotive (as in Expressionism), or political in nature (as in Artivism). A portion of the history of painting in both Eastern and Western art is dominated by religious art. Examples of this kind of painting range from artwork depicting mythological figures on pottery, to Biblical scenes Sistine Chapel ceiling, to scenes from the life of Buddha or other images of Eastern religious origin.
  5. preventative maintenance: Developing and implementing maintenance strategies to increase equipment life expectancy and avoid unplanned downtime.
