POSITION SUMMARY:
The Entry-Level Firefighter is primarily in an apprentice or training status. The duties associated with this position are many and varied and include aspects of fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency response and emergency medical service. The duties in this position also include various aspects of vehicle and equipment maintenance and housekeeping chores. The Entry-Level Firefighter is subject to be called upon to perform a wide range of duties within the scope of their level of training. This work involves performing fire and rescue procedures in often extreme situations and hazardous environments. Work is performed in an apprentice or training capacity under direct supervision and is continually evaluated. This position reports directly to the Chief of Training. The duty hours for the Entry-Level Firefighter may be up to 24 hours and longer as situations demand. The Entry-Level Firefighter will perform duties of an (EMT-I), (AEMT), or (EMT-P), performing the usual pre-hospital medical duties according to their level of training, standing orders, protocols and policies. The Entry-Level Firefighter performs a myriad of duties and accepts various responsibilities as required. Personnel in the Entry-Level Firefighter status are probationary employees for a minimum of 12 months or until the completion of the requirements for promotion to firefighter. All Entry-Level Firefighters must meet the minimum required standards established by Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council for annual training as well as those identified by Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responding to fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescue calls and other emergencies as a member of an emergency response team or unit. Training Performs fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical duties which may include but are not limited to: Ventilating burning structures and vehicles Search and rescue operations Raising, lowering, and climbing ladders Connecting supply and attack lines Holding and directing nozzles Directing water and chemical extinguishing agent streams Performing salvage and overhaul operations Performing emergency medical procedures within the employee’s licensure by the state of Georgia Setting up and retrieving medical equipment Driving and operating emergency response vehicles of various designs (i.e. fire apparatus, ambulances, tanker trucks, trucks, vans, cars, ATV’s, etc) Operating as a competent member of a fire company, a rescue squad, or an ambulance crew, etc. Stabilizing the scene Rescuing victims using extrication tools and other assorted equipment and tools Assisting and transporting patients Inspecting, cleaning and maintaining equipment, tools, and vehicles Performing preventive maintenance work on equipment, tools, vehicles and fire stations Performing custodial work and grounds maintenance at fire stations Performing fire prevention work including but not limited to inspecting and maintaining fire hydrants Participates in territory tours to become familiar with response areas Performs hose testing and completes associated documentation Performs data entry on computers to maintain files and reports Assists with pre-fire planning and completing forms, drawings and associated documentation Assists in conducting fire safety education programs, fire prevention tours and lectures for schools, civic groups, and businesses Performs training evolutions, exercises, drills and demonstrations to develop and maintain firefighting and emergency medical skills Completes reports, statements, and documentation as necessary on emergency calls, station duties, training and other activities Obtains fire training to accrue no less than 240 hours of training annually Successfully completes the annual Georgia firefighter core competency book Obtains sufficient medical training hours to maintain Georgia certification AEMT, EMT-I or EMT-P
