This posting is for one (1) Summer Camp Director position. Summer camp begins 6/12/2023 and ends 8/11/2023.

Summer Camp Director plans, organizes, implements and is responsible for the summer camp program. Supervises counselors assigned to the program and is responsible for their actions and well-being as well as those of the youth participants. Reports to the Youth & Teen Programs Coordinator.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Plan and supervise the Summer Camp Program for the City of Sunny Isles Beach; ensures that activities and programs are carried out according to the curriculum development.
  • Assist with developing policies and procedures.
  • Assist with developing and implementing crisis and risk management procedures.
  • Enforces all policies and procedures to ensure the safety and health of campers, and counselors.
  • Develops program plans - games, field trips, arts and crafts and special events in consultation with the camp counselors and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Assist with the marketing and promotion of the Youth & Teen Programs Coordinator.
  • Continually provide recommendations and assist with implementation of new activities to improve and/or enhance program effectiveness.
  • Ensure supervisor is updated orally, or in writing, on all activities and is kept informed of any related issues.
  • If required, perform light maintenance, i.e. garbage disposal or cleaning up.
  • Assures equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared.
  • Prepares oral and written reports on all aspects of the Summer Camp Program as required.
  • Meets weekly with program staff and provides feedback and mentoring towards improved performance.
  • Participates in the recruitment process for Summer Camp staff.
  • Establish work schedules for counselors.
  • Evaluate camp counselors and develops improvement plans when necessary.
  • Prepares oral and written reports on all aspects of the Summer Camp Program as required.
  • Performs other related duties or special projects as assigned.
  • Resolves critical issues and recommends course of action, as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to be creative with activities for the children.
  • Ability to be friendly and courteous at all times when working with the children and staff.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to assistants.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisory staff.
  • Ability to train and supervise program staff.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with children, adults and coworkers.
  • Good computer skills to include Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledgeable of recreational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skilled at resolving disputes exercising judgment and diplomacy.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Education, Recreation, or Physical Education preferred.
  • Experience as a Summer Camp Director or Assistant Director strongly desired or any acceptable combination of education and experience.

License or Certification:

  • CPR and First Aid certification is required and must be obtained before 6/1/2023 and remain valid through 8/11/2023.
  • Fingerprints and VECHS background check required.
  • Florida Driver's License required.
  • 40 hour Child Care Certification preferred.

Additional Information:

  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
  • Must be available to work at least 90% of the camp duration (6/12/2023 - 8/11/2023).
  • Must be available intermittently as of 4/1/2023 to assist with planning and coordination of program.
  • Must also attend mandatory staff meeting orientation on 5/22/2023 & 5/26/2023, parent orientation on 6/3/2023, and may be required to assist a week prior to start of camp, and week after camp ends. Dates subject to change.
