Dear Heather,Over the past three years I’ve developed a friendship with a co-worker. We’ve weathered a lot, both at work and in our personal lives. I respect him tremendously and appreciate how easily we’ve been able to relate to one another through administrative upheavals, divorces and the like. There has always been an underlying spark in our relationship, but we’ve been careful not to ignite it, as I am technically his superior (he’s an adjunct teacher in a separate department and could probably teach elsewhere). I’m also recently separated and still in the process of sorting through the e... view article details

Women are less aggressive negotiators than men. Now, a new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Mass. suggests the last factor may be... view article details

Forget Karma... Satya Nadella had a rough weekend. The new Microsoft CEO was at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference late last week, when a softball question turned into a fiasco. When asked what advice he would give to women looking to advance their careers but who are uncomfortable asking for a raise, Nadella inexplicably began talking about how women should let the system run its course and rely on karma instead of negotiating skills.“It’s not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right rai... view article details

More women than ever are entering the workforce. The number of women earning college degrees has now passed that of men. We are seeing an increase in the number of female executives at major corporations. So why do women still earn just 77 cents to a man's dollar? It's a good question, and one that Evelyn Murphy has spent most of her life trying to answer and solve. Murphy has a distinguished political career, including the distinction of being elected the first female lieutenant governor in the history of Massachusetts in 1986. She currently serves as the president of The WAGE (Women Are Gett... view article details
