The Marian Home was established in 1960 in the old Combelt Hotel at First Avenue North and Seventh Street, by the Catholic Diocese of Sioux City. Sister Mary Leopoldine, a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Help of St. Louis Missouri, was the Administrator of the newly formed nursing facility. The original Marian Home operated until 1974, when the office of Comprehensive Health Planning of Iowa approved the construction of a new facility. The 97 bed facility was approved by the board and requested the new structure be a "Diocesan Institution". A corporation was formed and the Bishop of the Diocese appointed a priest to take charge of construction. An "open house" was held April 25, 1976 and the Marian Home started to admit residents on May 26, 1976. In 1978 the Board of Directors saw a need to service people in another area of health care. Plans were drawn and construction was started on a twelve unit Independent Living Apartment complex, The Marian Village. The first phase of the apartment complex consisted of six single rooms, three two bedroom and three one bedroom apartments. In 1986 an additional seventeen apartments were opened for occupancy. The new addition consists of three 2 bedroom, nine I bedroom, three studio, and 2 single room apartments. Nursing services to the occupants is on an emergency nursing situation basis, with a variety of nursing procedures able to be set up. Meals are furnished to those interested. The residents of the Marian Village can take part in all activities and special events offered at the Marian Home. The apartment complex has a beautiful lounge and dining area for residents and family gatherings. All maintenance, utilities, and house keeping services, except telephone are furnished to the residents. The two facilities are connected by an enclosed walk way.
