Michigan Gastroenterology Institute was founded on August 1, 1998 upon the completion of the merger of Mid Michigan Gastroenterology Specialists and Gastroenterology Associates. These two long established specialty practices have been the major providers of gastrointestinal care to mid Michigan for many years. Gastroenterology Associates was founded by Richard Martens, M.D. in 1970. David H. Wiedemer, M.D. joined the practice in 1978, as did Paul R. Butler, M.D. in 1985. Upon Dr. Martens' retirement, Iftiker Ahmad, M.D. became the third member of the group in 1990. A fourth gastroenterologist, Albert B. Ross, M.D., arrived in 1995. Mid Michigan Gastroenterology Specialists also enjoyed steady growth since its founding in 1987 by William Weatherhead, D.O. Robert Rose, D.O. joined the practice in 1988, John Walling, D.O. in 1992 and Scott Plaehn, D.O. in 1996. Common needs and goals brought these two groups together for cooperative endeavors several years prior to their merger. This cooperation lead to the construction of a new office building at 1650 Ramblewood Drive, East Lansing, where the main offices of Michigan Gastroenterology Institute are now housed. Another highlight of MGI's brief history is the affiliation with Michigan State University on March 1, 2000, which brought closer ties with the academic medical community and two additional gastroenterologists to the practice. In addition to the main Ramblewood office, MGI services the mid Michigan community with clinics in Grand Ledge, Eaton Rapids Community Hospital and Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. Today growth continues as rapidly as ever and MGI is evolving to meet the challenges of this growth and the practice of Gastroenterology in this new millennium. To that end MGI added another associate, Siaka Yusuf, M.D., in December 2000. Dr. Yusuf brings to mid Michigan experience in endoscopic ultrasound, an increasingly important new tool for the gastroenterologist. In 2002 MGI had the pleasure of adding another physician to the practice.
