WHO WE ARE ... Established in 1971, the Senior Resource Development Agency, Pueblo, Inc. (SRDA) was created by a small group of citizens who were interested in providing meals to homebound elderly in the Pueblo community. Since then, SRDA has evolved into a comprehensive, coordinated service delivery system that employs 104 full-time and part-time staff and provides a wide range of senior and intergenerational services. The mission of SRDA is to provide programs and projects that enhance the quality of life for the senior community of Pueblo and increase opportunities for independent living. Through its inclusive structure, symbolized by SRDA's umbrella logo, the agency ensures that Pueblo area senior citizens and other frail and handicapped persons maintain healthy, self reliant and independent lifestyles as possible. In 1994, thanks to a combination of public and private funding, the Joseph H. Edwards Senior Center was built in downtown Pueblo at 230 N. Union Avenue. Our impressive facility, located near the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Project, City Hall, Historic Union Avenue District, and senior apartment complexes, houses the SRDA offices and our many comprehensive programs. Today, SRDA continues to be challenged by the high proportion of older residents living in Pueblo County and the number of elderly at or below the poverty threshold. It is estimated that approximately 25,554 or 19% of the county's population is 60 years of age or older, compared to 13% in the state as a whole. Approximately 38% of these older individuals are 75+ years of age. Of further significance, there are 2,600 seniors over the age of 85 in Pueblo County, which is a 46% increase since the 1990 Census. According to the State Demographer, the senior population is expected to increase substantially into the year 2005 as the "baby boomers" turn 60 years old.
