What does an Technical Curriculum Developer do at companies like 2U, Inc.?

What We’re Looking For:

The Lead Curriculum Architect is responsible to lead a team of subject matter experts and technical writers to create boot camp products to support our enterprise business, in addition to being an individual contributor writer, as needed. You will be the voice of scope and sequence for our programs, as well as technical quality and accuracy. You’ll work with your SME teams and instructional designers to ensure that the program content is highly instructive, engaging, and teachable, while resulting in expected learning outcomes for students. 

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

The ideal candidate for this role has created technical curricular content for adult learners, with a focus on full stack web development, data analytics, data science — specifically Java, Python, React, Angular, and other frameworks and programming languages. You have worked on highly complex projects with flexibly-resourced teams and have the ability to adapt quickly to changing requirements. You are always driving for great quality, but you also know when to “go pencils down” and ship a product, working iteratively to continue to improve based on student and instructor feedback. 

You will help to recruit, hire, and lead a team of full-time and part-time technical subject matter experts (curriculum engineers), working with this team to mentor them in our pedagogical approaches and ensuring that all curricula content is instructive, engaging, and teachable

You will be responsible for dreaming up and creating instructional activities for demonstrating key concepts in the technical skills areas for which we are building programs

You will be responsible for improving portions of our curriculum based on student learning data -- and continually asked to create improved content for teaching topics covered in our program

You will architect new curriculum proposals based on client needs and, as needed, support as a technical expert on sales calls

You will be responsible for staying abreast of technology trends and incorporate these trends into the curriculum

Things That Should Be In Your Background:

  • Someone with at least 3 years of industry experience working on technical curriculum for adult learners
  • Someone with a lot of hands-on experience. We’re building a program in which students learn by doing! At a minimum, you should have a strong familiarity with technical learning content and tools including, but not limited to:
    • HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
    • React and Angular
    • Rest APIs
    • Java
    • Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, Spring JdbcTemplates     
    • Python and Python libraries 
    • SQL, Data Analytics, Science, and/or Engineering
    • Dev Ops, Jenkins, Continuous Integration. Continuous Deployment
    • AWS and Azure
  • Business Analyst and Agile Project Management skills
  • Someone who absolutely loves teaching and sharing knowledge with others. It’s ideal if you’ve taught front-end development or programming in the past. Major plus if have experience with online or asynchronous learning.
  • Someone with a creative itch! This program will require a great deal of ingenuity and setup to create at scale. 
  • Someone who is a lot of fun! We want learning technology to be exciting and engaging.
  • Someone who can work well in a distributed team. We’ve got a team of brilliant curriculum developers who can build amazing modules. We want someone who can bring expertise and new ideas to the program.  
  • Someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty. In this capacity, you’ll be responsible for keeping live curriculum up-to-date for hundreds of Instructors and TAs across the country. This means managing issues, pull requests, and bug fixes. It also means taking in community input on technology trends and feedback on the curriculum. We need someone with a bit of thick skin, an infectious enthusiasm for continual improvement, and a collaborative spirit.
