Primary Function/Primary Goals/Objectives:
The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) function concerns itself with the health and safety of employees through prevention of incidents, accidents, illnesses and injuries, and protection of the environment. Included in the EHS function areas are environmental, safety, employee health, industrial hygiene, fire and security. The EHS Specialist will be responsible for the plant’s safety and environmental programs.
Major Responsibilities:
• Develops, implements, and manages safety programs in accordance with OSHA and Abbott standards.
• Manage the site’s environmental programs, including wastewater permit reporting, hazardous waste shipping, and air emission tracking.
• Attend and lead Safety Committee meetings.
• Prepare EHS presentations and written communications, and present to site leadership and employees.
• Implements and manages company policies and procedures.
• Conducts risk assessments.
• Develops and conducts EHS training, including new hire orientations.
• Maintain files and records pertaining to safety and industrial hygiene.
• Perform accident/incident investigations and corrective action review.
• Conduct frequent plant audits to evaluate regulatory compliance performance and develop corrective actions.
• Review the installation and modification of equipment/processes for EHS issues.
• Assist Occupational Health in a variety of industrial hygiene functions.
• Stay informed on current EHS regulations and legislation and recommend policy changes.
• Serve as a member of the site’s Emergency Response Team, which includes responses to medical and environmental incidents.
Education:
A four-year degree is required – Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene or related field. Experience may be substituted for degree. The preferred candidate will have at least 3 – 5 years of safety experience in a manufacturing setting.
Background:
• Working knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
• Working knowledge of safety programs: LOTO, Powered Industrial Trucks, Confined Space, Working at Heights, Machine Safety, Ergonomics, Hearing Conservation, Contractor Safety, Factory Mutual, Respiratory Protection, PPE, Job Hazard Analysis, etc.
• Ability to translate regulatory requirements into policies and procedures.
• Proven leadership skills and the ability to make good decisions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to drive site safety culture improvement.
• Solid strategic, problem solving and analytical skills.
• Program management skills, including proven ability to deliver thorough and timely solutions to issues and initiatives.
• Ability to work independently to drive for results.
• Flexibility to come in on off-shifts and weekends as needed to conduct training, accident investigations, etc.
