What does a Associate Scientist, Mass Spectrometry- Protein Characterization do at companies like ACCELERON PHARMA INC?

Who are we?

Acceleron is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of therapeutics to treat serious and rare diseases. Acceleron’s leadership in the understanding of TGF-beta superfamily biology and protein engineering generates innovative compounds that engage the body's ability to regulate cellular growth and repair.

Acceleron focuses its research and development efforts in hematologic and pulmonary diseases. In hematology, Acceleron and its global collaboration partner, Bristol Myers Squibb, are co-promoting newly approved REBLOZYL® (luspatercept-aamt), the first and only approved erythroid maturation agent, in the United States and are developing luspatercept for the treatment of chronic anemia in myelodysplastic syndromes and myelofibrosis. Acceleron is also developing sotatercept for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, having recently reported positive topline results of the Phase 2 PULSAR trial and actively enrolling patients in the Phase 2 SPECTRA trial.

What’s in it for you?

As a member of the protein characterization team within the Research department, you will be working with an interactive, multi-disciplinary team to characterize proteins in support of drug discovery, with focus on chromatography- and mass spectrometry-based technologies.  The candidate will also contribute to the establishment of robust workflows for LC-MS-based proteomics and quantitative data analysis. In this role, the candidate will work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and will be required to prepare technical documents and presentations. The qualified candidate will be hired at the appropriate level commensurate with education and years of experience.

What will you be doing?

  • Characterize candidate biological drugs by peptide mapping, post-translational modification assignment, glycan characterization, disulfide mapping, intact and subunit mass analysis, focusing on antibodies and fusion proteins
  • Develop methods and perform nano LC-MS proteomics experiments in support of defining the mechanism of action of our candidate drugs
  • Responsibilities will include sample preparation of monoclonal antibodies and fusion proteins, preparation of reagents, enzymatic digestions, protein isolation from complex biological samples, and maintenance of analytical instrumentation
  • Document, analyze, interpret, and present reports and results at various meetings, both internally and externally to collaborators and at conferences

What are we looking for?

  • Sc. with 5-10 years of experience or M.Sc. with 2-5 years of experience with emphasis on protein characterization and/or quantitative analysis by mass spectrometry
  • Significant experience with sample preparation, assay development, chromatographic (UPLC and nano LC) optimization and instrument tuning
  • Experience with Thermo hardware and software is highly desirable but not required
  • Experience with developing and performing nano LC-MS/MS experiments for proteomic research is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Excellent technical and problem-solving skills and ability to perform detailed laboratory experiments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team setting

How will you grow with us?

You will work within the Protein Characterization group and will significantly contribute to our ability to continuously provide characterization of discovery/development molecules as well as aid in defining the mechanism of action of our drugs in animal models. You will collaborate with knowledgeable and driven team members who will challenge and support you daily to push scientific boundaries and grow in your career.  Passion, inquiry, and teamwork drive this group; join our team and help us achieve our goals while having fun along the way!
