Program Overview

Haven Academy is a K-8 charter school in the South Bronx that empowers children in an educational environment which addresses and reduces the barriers to academic success through the integration of family support services with a rigorous, college-preparatory academic program.

The Haven Alumni Program was launched in Summer 2020 with the aim of extending Haven’s culture of support to Haven scholars as they transition to high school. During the summer following their graduation from 8th grade at Haven Academy, each scholar will be matched with a full-time tutor/academic coach who will meet with them regularly at their home or nearby in the community and provide individualized instruction across every subject where the student needs help.

The program will continue working with students through the end of the summer following their graduation from high school, and will have the following goals:

• Through a combination of instruction and academic mentorship, build the comprehension, confidence, and academic skills of participating students.
• Increase the rate at which Haven scholars experience high school success, as measured by GPA, standardized test scores, and progress toward timely graduation.
• Ensure that every Haven scholar who is interested in pursuing postsecondary education has the support they need to make a successful transition to college.

The Tutor Role

Tutors are caring, engaging, versatile educators who provide long-term individualized instruction and academic coaching to students in the Haven Alumni program in the students’ homes or nearby in the community.

Tutors divide their time between working directly with students, communicating with schools and families, documenting sessions, traveling between students, and participating in team meetings, coaching, and self-study to develop their tutoring skills.

Tutors in the Haven Alumni Program will have the following responsibilities:

• Meeting with a caseload of 15-17 students 1x/week on average to work with them across any subject where they need support.
• Helping students to develop effective study habits and organizational skills.
• Engaging students during tutoring sessions and making outreach to students and families to support regular tutoring attendance.
• Reporting feedback on tutoring sessions.
• Connecting students and families to appropriate resources when they face challenges that go beyond the scope of the tutor’s role.
• Participating in independent study, weekly team meetings, and biweekly coaching with the Tutor Supervisor to refine their content knowledge and tutoring approach.
• When needed, identifying and developing study aids for teaching and practicing high-value content areas.
• Advising and coaching students on educational challenges that arise inside and outside the classroom.
• Supporting students as needed with transfer high school applications and, as students approach their junior and senior years, with college applications.
• Reaching out to schools to coordinate with teachers, advocate for students, and collect data.

Qualifications and Competencies

• A bachelor’s degree
• Prior experience teaching or tutoring and prior experience working with adolescents preferred
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to deliver high-quality tutoring across a range of subjects at the high school level, as demonstrated through a mock tutoring interview.
• Available when students are available (including evenings and potentially one weekend day) and willing to travel extensively and work with students in the home.
• Patient and positive; able to engage and build a collaborative relationship with students.
• Able to identify and reflect on what went well or poorly in a tutoring session and effectively integrate new strategies and feedback into their instruction and engagement approach.
• Punctual, professional, dependable, persistent, and passionate about working with Haven alums.
