Ver-Mac is proudly a family-operated business. We regard our customers, distributors and staff as part of our extended family, partners with whom we strive to work closely in order to achieve a common goal: building the roads of tomorrow. The Ver-Mac story begins in 1957, when Vernal McBain and his two sons started up a small drill equipment conversion shop supplying the construction industry. In 1963 Vernal's son, Raymond founded Ray-Mac Inc., which rented heavy equipment and steel barricades for construction work areas. Once these barriers were built and installed, it became obvious to Raymond that traffic needed to be directed around the work site, in order to protect both workers and road users. This realization led to the company's producing wooden flaggers that indicated to road users which direction to follow. Just two years later Raymond had merged both companies and shifted the focus of the company firmly into road construction and traffic control. In early 1980's Ver-Mac started to manufacture vehicle-mounted electronic arrow boards: the first company in Canada to do so. Shortly after the Ver-Mac line of arrow boards evolved to become portable and stand-alone; they were mounted on trailers and diesel-powered. Although road construction necessitated traffic direction, it was also obvious that road users needed reliable information. Under the combined direction of Ver-Mac's third generation, Raymond's daughter Sandra-Lee and husband Whitney Richardson, Ver-Mac production emphasis has moved to manufacturing solar powered sophisticated electronic signalling and messaging equipment. In 2003, due to an increasing demand of Ver-Mac products, the company bought a 80,000 ft square in order to increase its production capacity and meet its customer's needs. Today, Ver-Mac manufactures over 70 trailers per week and delivers the Ver-Mac experience all over the globe. Ver-Mac's focus on the future in no way lessens our commitment to maintaining the Ver-Mac hallmarks of heavy-duty quality, reliability and concern ...

What Skills Does a person Need at Ver-Mac?

At Ver-Mac, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Hydraulics: Hydraulics is a technology and applied science using engineering, chemistry, and other sciences involving the mechanical properties and use of liquids.
  2. Pneumatics: Pneumatics (pronounced new-MATT-ix) is an aspect of physics and engineering that is concerned with using the energy in compressed gas to make something move or work.
  3. Welding: Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by using high heat to melt the parts together and allowing them to cool causing fusion. Welding is distinct from lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal. In addition to melting the base metal, a filler material is typically added to the joint to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to form a joint that, based on weld configuration (butt, full penetration, fillet, etc.), can be stronger than the base material (parent metal). Pressure may also be used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce a weld. Welding also requires a form of shield to protect the filler metals or melted metals from being contaminated or oxidized. Many different energy sources can be used for welding, including a gas flame (chemical), an electric arc (electrical), a laser, an electron beam, friction, and ultrasound. While often an industrial process, welding may be performed in many different environments, including in open air, under water, and in outer space. Welding is a hazardous undertaking and precautions are required to avoid burns, electric shock, vision damage, inhalation of poisonous gases and fumes, and exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation.
  4. Plumbing: Plumbing is any system that conveys fluids for a wide range of applications. Plumbing uses pipes, valves, plumbing fixtures, tanks, and other apparatuses to convey fluids. Heating and cooling (HVAC), waste removal, and potable water delivery are among the most common uses for plumbing, but it is not limited to these applications. The word derives from the Latin for lead, plumbum, as the first effective pipes used in the Roman era were lead pipes. In the developed world, plumbing infrastructure is critical to public health and sanitation. Boilermakers and pipefitters are not plumbers although they work with piping as part of their trade and their work can include some plumbing.
  5. Troubleshooting: Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving, often applied to repair failed products or processes on a machine or a system. It is a logical, systematic search for the source of a problem in order to solve it, and make the product or process operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to identify the symptoms. Determining the most likely cause is a process of elimination—eliminating potential causes of a problem. Finally, troubleshooting requires confirmation that the solution restores the product or process to its working state. In general, troubleshooting is the identification or diagnosis of "trouble" in the management flow of a system caused by a failure of some kind. The problem is initially described as symptoms of malfunction, and troubleshooting is the process of determining and remedying the causes of these symptoms. A system can be described in terms of its expected, desired or intended behavior (usually, for artificial systems, its purpose). Events or inputs to the system are expected to generate specific results or outputs. (For example, selecting the "print" option from various computer applications is intended to result in a hardcopy emerging from some specific device). Any unexpected or undesirable behavior is a symptom. Troubleshooting is the process of isolating the specific cause or causes of the symptom. Frequently the symptom is a failure of the product or process to produce any results. (Nothing was printed, for example). Corrective action can then be taken to prevent further failures of a similar kind.
