The Ohio State Office of AARP is looking for an undergraduate intern with the energy, drive, skill set and ability to pick things up quickly to help change the dialogue on some of the most important issues to the most powerful voting demographic in the state and nation: the 50+. The intern will split their time between Communications and Outreach.


The intern will be connecting with members, volunteers, and staff to better understand and help share the full story of our work across Ohio. This will include working with the Communication, Advocacy, and Outreach teams to promote, execute and provide internal/external reporting of events and activities. Specific duties may include: identifying venues; developing materials; taking video and photos at events; interviewing people with stories to share; and research and write media advisories, blogs, and social media posts.


The intern will be under the supervision of the Manager of Advocacy and Communications. The intern will work on the campaigns associated with Health and Financial Security at the federal and state levels while building an increased presence around internal and external communication channels. The intern will assist the Ohio team to increase relevance and social impact throughout Ohio and position the organization for the future. 

The position will coordinate earned, unearned and digital media in coordination with the Communication Associate State Director and Program Specialist. Also, the position will work closely with our Associate State Directors for Outreach in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Identifying potential opportunities to increase visibility and work on specific communications tactics within the Ohio Tactical Communication Plan as it relates to Advocacy and Outreach activities.
  • Assist with coordinating events and activities at the direction of the Manager of Advocacy and Communications
  • Provide Outreach support to the Outreach ASDs at the direction of the Manager of Outreach and Volunteer Engagement
  • Coordinating with key volunteers to assist with the site coordination and collaborating to increase earned media and digital presence.
  • Attending and participating in volunteer/grassroots meetings.
  • Putting together key materials for events and collaborating with support team on materials.


  • Participate in team meetings and key huddles to plan, execute and promote activities.
  • Attend key events with both the advocacy and outreach teams and assist with logistics.
  • Attend key outreach events to promote in real-time to a broader audience
  • Meet regularly with supervisor to get feedback and provide ideas and insights.

Prospective intern must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors.

  AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.

The positions requires:

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of Facebook and Twitter.
  • Experience with any or all of the following software/applications is highly desirable: Creating and editing videos, YouTube, WordPress, Sprinkler.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; have an interest in learning about issues impacting people 50+; possess excellent organizational and communications skills; and be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in our Columbus office.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; be in good academic standing; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors
