Overview

AARP's Legal Counsel for the Elderly champions the dignity and rights of vulnerable Washington, D.C. seniors 60-plus, providing free legal and social work services to those in need - empowering, defending, protecting, and helping thousands of clients each year in many areas of civil law.

Are you passionate about communications and social media? The communications department of Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) is charged with all external and internal communications about the work we do on behalf of vulnerable DC seniors. This is an opportunity to develop your social media and writing skills and use your creativity to maximize internal communications vehicles. We are committed to your growth and will cultivate your continued learning and development. This paid internship position will begin in Summer/Fall of 2023 and end in December 2023, with the possibility of extending into 2024.


Responsibilities

The Communications Intern will work closely with and report to the Communications Manager.

  • Develop social media content
  • Assist with writing internal communications that promote our work
  • Research topics to develop and pitch to the media and observe interaction with the reporters and interviews
  • Assist with developing an archiving system for LCE legislative work
  • Assist with other tasks as needed

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; be considered a rising undergraduate junior or senior, graduate student, or post-doctoral student; and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship and pursuing a degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related fields
  • Can provide writing samples, social media content, videos, and other communications pieces
  • Must be a self-starter and adaptable to working under tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations, including gender, race, and sexual orientation
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Familiarity with creating and editing videos and knowledge of multiple social media platforms

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
