Job Skills / Requirements
Supervises the work of an assigned security team to assure proper safety and security of Museum facilities, collection, visitors, and employees. As a member of the Protection Services Department, the Protection Services Team Leader works closely with their direct-reports, peers, supervisors, and senior staff to fulfill the mission of the museum and provide exceptional visitor experiences while maintaining the highest standards of professional practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Trains, plans, organizes, directs, monitors, and evaluates the work of assigned staff
- Acts as “Leader on Duty” as assigned by coordinating details of security activity for assigned shift, and assumes control of emergency situations in absence of the Executive Team Leader and Director
- Assists Protection Services Coordinator, Executive Team Leader, and Director in formulating plans and procedures for the department
- Oversees on-boarding and training of assigned Protection Services staff
- Assists guests and staff regarding general inquires and Museum rules by representing the Museum in a professional and guest-service oriented manner
- Prepares forms and reports, as necessary, in an accurate and timely manner
- Reviews and understands all applicable laws, policies, and procedures and trains Protection Services staff in their application
- Implements timely and appropriate response to Museum policy violations, safety and security concerns and/or incidents, fire, severe weather, and other emergencies by following established security procedures and notifies Supervisory Staff immediately
- Coordinates back-filling open positions as needed for absent staff members of current and up-coming shifts
- Maintains knowledge of Museum policies, procedures, post instructions, personnel, organization, exhibit locations, and areas of interest
- Ensures proper care and maintenance of assigned uniforms and equipment
- Performs other duties, or related work as assigned, or may be required
Qualifications:
- High school diploma, or GED required, some college preferred
- Two years of Security experience – education or similar work experience may be substituted
- Ability to read, speak, and write clearly and concisely using the English language
- Ability to be First Aid, CPR, and AED Certified, maintain certification, and render medical assistance as necessary
- Maintains a professional image at all times – position requires wearing a uniform and meeting uniform standards
Essential Skills:
- Ability to effectively operate a computer and necessary programs; proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred
- Ability to be flexible for interruptions and changing priorities, and to work effectively with staff, volunteers and museum guests
- Focused on attention to detail, taking initiative, and maintaining a positive attitude while working with a sense of urgency
- Demonstrates integrity, dependability, exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work with people at all levels of organization
- Possesses and demonstrates a working knowledge of supervisory skills
- Demonstrates knowledge of security and safety procedures, security officer operations and procedures, various physical and electronic security and computer systems, and emergency response procedures
- Ability to remain calm, and exercise good judgement and discretion when dealing with stressful and difficult situations
- Ability to politely and professionally enforce Museum security and safety policies with all guests, staff, volunteers, and contractors
- Previous supervisory experience preferred
- Previous Museum experience preferred

- To include, but not limited to: Museum space (gallery and non-gallery), storage space, offices, exterior grounds of the facility, parking garage, and other
Physical Demands
- Must be in good physical condition to carry out the requirements of the position, including but not limited to:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or move equipment, supplies, etc. of up to 50 pounds throughout the workday
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, up to entirety of shiftbility to quickly move around all areas of Museum property – including use of stairs, step-stools, ladders
- Ability to reach, bend, squat/crouch, climb, kneel, crawl and twist
- Use computer, telephone, and communications equipment (cell phone, radios, etc.)
- Sees and hears, or uses prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- This is a full-time non-exempt position of 40 hours per week. This position is eligible for overtime pay.
- May be required to work as a Control Room Officer or Gallery Attendant, as needed, fulfill the mission of the Protection Services Department
- Schedule flexibility required. May be required to work beyond regularly scheduled shift, on weekend and/or holidays, as needed, to maintain minimum security requirements of the museu
- “Conduct a visual inventory of artwork in assigned area at the beginning, throughout, and at the end of assigned shift”
