The Senior Managing Counsel provides leadership and participates in the most complex legal actions. Oversees the activities and work-products of attorneys and support staff. Being a Senior Managing Counsel monitors case status, timelines and issues. Directs law office operations, case assignments, and staffing. In addition, Senior Managing Counsel manages budgets and spending for external counsel. Mentors and coaches attorneys and implements staff professional development programs. Requires a JD. Requires admittance to a State Bar. Typically reports to a top legal executive or the general counsel. The Senior Managing Counsel typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Working as a Senior Managing Counsel typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.
