Abilities First, Inc., a CQL accredited organization, has been making a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities for over fifty years. Starting out as The Little Red School House in 1962, Abilities First, Inc. has evolved into the Hudson Valley’s premiere provider of support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. We offer a wide variety of services including school and preschool programs, day habilitation, residential habilitation, community habilitation, service coordination and employment services.
Community Habilitation offers a wealth of valuable, one–on–one services to children and adults with disabilities who live at home with their families. The program offers choices and increased independence while encouraging productivity and shared community involvement. Through a variety of activities geared toward enhancing daily life-skills development, our knowledgeable, creative staff provide families with much-needed assistance by spending time with program participants in their homes and out in the community.
Independent self-starter needed to work directly one-on-one in the community with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Responsibilities include training individuals in the performance of personal hygiene and self-care tasks (dressing, grooming, etc.) general household chores, mobility to maximize independence in personal health care and travel, financial management, appropriate social behaviors. Duties also include the development of com-hab service plans, recording and monitoring progress, maintaining appropriate documentation, and assume driving responsibilities when needed.
The following opportunities are available (shifts may be combined to equal a full time position):
  • Beacon:  Any 3 weekdays, 4:30pm-6:30pm  - or -  Any 2 weekdays, 4 hours per day
  • Beacon (Pick Up) / Plattekill (Drop Off):  Thursday, 8 hours
  • Fishkill:  Wednesday, 9am-12pm or 10am-1pm
  • Hopewell Junction:  Tues-Sat, starting at 4pm, up to 15 hrs/week  - or -  Any day Mon-Fri, 9am-1pm
  • Lagrange (Pick Up) / Staatsburg (Drop Off):  Friday, 9am-3pm
  • The Mews (Hopewell Junction):  Various shifts including weekdays, evenings and weekends
  • Millbrook:  Mon, Tues, Wed, Friday, 2:30pm-6pm
  • Pawling:  Sunday, 4 hours
  • Pleasant Valley:  Any weekday combination, 20 hrs/week
  • Poughkeepsie:  Various shifts including weekdays, evenings and weekends
  • Staatsburg (Pick Up) / Wappingers Falls (Drop Off):  Any two afternoons, 8 hrs/week
  • Wappingers Falls:  Thursday, 9am-3pm

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or a combination of education and experience required.
  • Background checks mandatory as required by NYS OPWDD.
  • Must possess effective coaching and communication skills, respect confidentiality and be personable.
